The HCS Vintage Halloween Game Room brings documented historical Halloween games back to life using period instructions, historical research and carefully created digital recreations. New games will be added as we uncover, research and recreate them.
Play Apple Paring
Apple Paring is the first game in the HCS Vintage Halloween Game Room. HCS has traced a closely related apple-paring love divination to John Gay's The Shepherd's Week in 1714. By the late nineteenth century, apple-paring divination was being associated with Halloween, and in 1903 it appeared as a formally described Halloween party game.
Could the shape of a fallen apple peel really reveal the first letter of your future mate's name? That was the fortune. Our digital recreation lets members choose an apple, pare it, swing the paring, toss it and see what letter it forms.

About the HCS Vintage Halloween Game Room
This is not a collection of modern games dressed up to look old. The Game Room is part of the Halloween Collectors Society's work to preserve Halloween history - including traditions that cannot simply be placed on a shelf.
For each game, we look for historical documentation, compare versions when the rules changed over time, and separate what the sources actually say from later retellings. Then, when a game can be responsibly recreated, we build a playable digital version that keeps the historical idea and outcome intact instead of adding modern rules simply to make it more dramatic.
The objects collectors save are only part of Halloween history. The games people played, the fortunes they told, the jokes they shared and the strange little rituals that once filled Halloween parties are part of that history too. The Game Room gives us a way to preserve those traditions by actually experiencing them again.

Apple Paring is Game No. 1, not the end of the room. As HCS uncovers and researches more documented Halloween amusements, we will add them here one at a time. Some may become digital games. Others may make more sense as printable recreations or historically documented activities. Either way, we are going to follow the sources and let the history tell us what belongs here.
